It’s possible to govern through civil debate

Being seriously concerned about our national budget, our poor economy and the lack of good paying jobs, I attended a non-partisan project on June 26 at Drake University.

The AmericaSpeaks town-hall style meeting involved 3,500 citizens from across America on the topics of our national budget and economy. The groups were diverse and committed to finding solutions to our nation’s financial challenges by setting value based priorities.
This exchange of ideas and open dialogue was a true example of democracy in progress, a stark contrast to our Congress. In one day we resolved our budget crises and planned a course to restore the U.S. economy.
Practical solutions work when you don’t have to consider the lobbyist wish list. We all debated openly while respecting other people’s views, and being able to put ourselves in other people’s shoes.
So the question is, will our representatives listen to the citizens of this democratic process, or the financial backers of their campaigns?
